Gibraltar and La Linea de La Concepcion
Visited on 15-16 July 2025
Gibraltar is under UK though located on the tip of Spain. The Spanish city in the border is La Linea de La Concepcion. The border has pedestrian crossing with passport check at both Spanish and UK side. At the Spanish side, there was shopping/restaurant arcade with Burger King and Mc Donald's.
Since the cost in Gibraltar is much more expensive than La Linea, we decided to stay in La Linea and walk through the border to Gibraltar.
Gibraltar
City Center
The city center is located around this point https://maps.app.goo.gl/TnzH7bJtTvsg7CJq6
There is pedestrian street full of shops. Surprisingly, most shops closed early at about 5pm.
Upper Rock and the National Park
We followed the sign to Upper Rock from the City Center.
There is a ticket check at the entrance near Moorish Castle. https://maps.app.goo.gl/DyZPFwLZWwfuPmJa8
Since we booked the ticket online, we just showed the email and were handed over the paper bracelet with bar code.
Since the Moorish Castle was closed, we continued to visit some attractions like World War II Tunnels, City Under Siege, Great Siege Tunnels. The view on the hill was nice.
We walked about one hour to Apes Den, where we saw a lot of monkeys. Then walked up the stairs (Charles V Wall) which was quite long and steep. We missed to go to the platform near the Cable Car Upper Station which supposed to have great view. We directly went to Skywalk, which was not that impressive, then we went to Saint Michael's Cave. There was a project mapping show inside the cave. We wanted to go to O'Hara's Battery, but it was closed when we arrived.
The best part was the Mediterranean Steps (https://maps.app.goo.gl/WazSgiMgkYED8VEM6), a hiking course with great views. The hiking course ended in Pillars of Hercules (https://maps.app.goo.gl/xTcYkNCFh6JMH6EG7). From there, back to the City Center is about 40 minutes walk.
La Linea de La Concepcion
It is a small Spanish city, mostly used as hub to Gibraltar.
There is a small old city center with square and restaurants.
There was a large fair when we was there, with many stalls and amusement park.
Transportation
Recommended by Couchsurfing friend, we ordered Blablacar from Seville. It was not available till before our departure. There is also direct bus from Seville to La Linea. The car takes about 2 hours while the bus is 4 hours. The Blablacar is also cheaper.
Blablacar app needs to be downloaded, and a European number is required to make a booking.
Communication
My esim was not working. But my friend SIM Card from French Free was working.
